Maynes Coaches is a family owned business that has traded successfully since 1947.  The delivery of a professional service to all customers is the mainstay of the Company and this is borne out in the way the staff works as well as the standard and comfort of the coach and all equipment used to provide this service.

Management and staff are fully committed to a programme of training and quality accreditation.  At present Maynes are also proud to be the only Scottish member of the Guild of British Coach Operators, and have won several awards as Coach Operator Of The Year to underline their commitment to excellence.

All our drivers are highly trained professionals and have experience in all types of private hire, conference and tour work.  Many of our drivers have been with Our Company for up to 20 years and we are proud of the many requests and compliments we receive for them.

Every one of our drivers goes through a tough selection procedure to ensure that we employ those with experience and professionalism, we choose drivers with the right personality that ensures that our customers receive the kind of care and attention to details they deserve.

All our driving team goes through a stringent in house training plan, undergoing approximately 17 hours training per year from basic safety procedures to defensive and interactive driving tests.  Also, we check our driver’s history by undertaking a full disclosure check as well as having drivers licence checked by the DVLA yearly ensuring they have the full licence entitlement for the type of vehicle they are likely to drive.

With this in mind Maynes Coaches during the last year have joined the Association of Trainers, the key objective of the Association  is to provide a Quality Assurance scheme for PSV and freight vehicle operators to produce driver CPC periodic training.

A new qualification for professional bus, coach and lorry drivers – the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) – has been given the Government go-ahead.  In future, just holding a vocational driving licence will not be sufficient for someone who wishes to drive such vehicles for a living.

The driver CPC will require that all category C and D licence holders (including C1 and D1) to take part in 35 hours training every 5 years in order to maintain their CPC.

Our Company can provide you with Quality Approved training courses, which, because they have been
pre-registered with the JAUPT (Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training) will offer you a cost effective training package.

Using our own in-house training room we can accommodate up to 10 drivers per seven hour course, this can be booked individually or by a Company block.  Being involved with the transport Industry we understand the need to be flexible and will meet any require requirements that your operation may need i.e. weekend course etc.

Also, if needed, we can bring our courses to you.  If you have a suitable training room or venue, our Company can bring our experience and expertise closer to your operation saving your Company and drivers extra costs.

Information on the Driver CPC for Bus, Coach and Lorry Drivers.

The Driving Standards Agency is taking the lead in implementing EU Directive 2003/59 which requires all professional bus, coach and lorry drivers to hold a CPC in addition to their vocational driving licence.  It comes into force across all European Union member states on 10th September 2008 for bus and coach drivers and 10th September 2009 for lorry drivers.

The main benefit is road safety and better qualified drivers to help reduce road casualties.  Driver CPC should also bring an improved professional and positive image to the profession, attracting more people to drive buses, coaches and lorries for a living.  It is aimed at not only improving the knowledge and skills of LGV and PCV drivers when they start work, but also at ensuring these skills are maintained and developed throughout their working life.

Driver CPC will enable young people to enter these sectors in a safe and professional manner, from 18 years of age, subject to any licence restrictions for category D drivers.

The DSA is working closely with the trade associations for the freight and bus and coach industries, the Sector Skills Councils and other government agencies to ensure Driver CPC is implemented in a way that suits the needs of the industries.

About the Driver CPC

What is Driver CPC?
Driver CPC is short for ‘Driver Certificate of Professional Competence’.  It is a new qualification that all bus, coach and lorry drivers will need to have and is being introduced across the European Union to maintain high driving standards.

Why is it being introduced?
The aims of Driver CPC are to:

  • Improve Road Safety
  • Recognise and accredit skills for professional bus, coach and lorry drivers
  • Encourage drivers to continually update their skills and knowledge
  • Raise the status of bus, coach and lorry drivers to promote driving as a career

What does the term ‘acquired rights’ mean?
‘Acquired rights’, or grandfather rights as they are often known, is a term used when people who hold an existing qualification (for instance a vocational driving licence) do not have to re-qualify when new conditions are introduced.   They are allowed to retain the rights they previously acquired.  If you hold a full vocational licence before the CPC implementation dates, you will fall into this category.

What is periodic Training?
‘Periodic Training’ is regular training that will continue throughout your professional driving career to help you as a driver and to encourage safe driving for life.  You will need to complete ‘periodic training’ of thirty five hours every five years to retain your Driver CPC.  There will be a range of courses available and training will be tailored to suit your individual needs to help you become an even better driver.  The training is grouped under three headings:

  • Safe and Fuel efficient driving (this may include vehicle loading, fuel consumption and pollution)
  • Legal Requirements (rules for tachograph, driver hours)
  • Health & Safety, service and logistics (including First Aid, Passenger Safety, Customer Service)

Only courses approved by the DSA and delivered by accredited training organisations will count towards your ‘periodic training’.  If the end date passes without you undertaking any such training, then your Driver CPC will expire and you could face legal charges if you continue to drive in a professional capacity.

Can I ignore Driver CPC and still drive professionally?
The simple answer is “no” you cannot ignore Driver CPC.  If you are a bus, coach or lorry driver and you are not covered by any exemptions you will need to take action.

What about new drivers?
Anyone obtaining or applying for a lorry, bus or coach licence after the implementation dates will not have acquired rights.  They will not be able to obtain their first Driver CPC by taking their ‘periodic training’ on its own.  They will have to take an initial Driver CPC test before being able to drive professionally.  This can be taken at the same time as the vocational driving test.

What is the initial CPC test?
The initial Driver CPC test is in two parts:
*   A Driver CPC Theory Test (which lasts four hours in total with case studies)
*   A Driver CPC Practical Test (which lasts two hours and includes elements similar to the ‘show me, tell me’ part of the existing Practical Driving Test taken by all car drivers).  The new test will enable drivers to gain a more in-depth and practical understanding of driving as a profession, and once the initial Driver CPC test has been passed you will be entitled to a Driver CPC and a vocational Driving Licence.

When will it start?
For bus and coach drivers it is 10th September 2008 and for lorry drivers 10th September 2009.
