We leave the shores of the Cromarty Firth behind us and head towards the famous Loch Ness Passing through the historic town of Dingwall which was a centre of Viking administration and decision making, and was on the frontier between the Norse held Northern Scotland and the Kingdom of the Scots. We then head through the beautiful village of Beauly 'C'est un beau lieu', from the french what a beautiful place, was Mary Queen of Scots reaction to the grandeur of the scene when she stayed in Beauly in the 16th century, and local tradition credits the naming of the village to her.
Our coach then head over some wonderful Highland Moorland before dropping down to the village of Drumnadrochit!! the epicentre of all things Nessie!! We then head up to Urquhart Castle ( payable entry ) for an opportunity to spot the Loch Ness Monster and a catch photo of the castle as it drops down towards Loch Ness. Our journey continues northwards up the Great Glen, a scar like fault line which runs over 60 miles from Inverness in the north to Fort William in the south.
Our coach then takes you to Inverness City Centre where you have plenty free time to explore the city centre where this thriving city offers a rich variety of things to do and see from shopping and culture to eating and drinking. You could also visit the pink crenellated castle with wonderful views down the River Ness, or simply take a stroll through the streets.
We then take a scenic drive through the city and head out passing the Culloden Battlefield . The Battle of Culloden was the last pitched battle fought on British soil. It was the final, bloody confrontation of the 1745 Jacobite Rising. With over 1,200 dead in just one hour Culloden was a short but bloody battle The battle was the final confrontation of the 1745 Jacobite Rising. On 16 April 1746, the Jacobite forces of Charles Edward Stuart ( Bonny Prince Charlie ) fought loyalist troops commanded by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland. The Hanoverian victory at Culloden decisively halted the Jacobite intent to overthrow the House of Hanover and restore the House of Stuart to the British throne.
We then take in some splendid countryside before arriving at the fantastic Estate at Cawdor ( payable entry ) where we will spend 1.5 hours here to give you the ample time to look around castle and Gardens. A magical name, romantically linked by Shakespeare with Macbeth. The superb fairy-tale Castle has just what every visitor is looking for, full of Scottish history that you can touch and see and sense for yourself. Cawdor Castle is a splendid house and the home of the Cawdor family to this day. Cawdor Castle dates from the late 14th century and was built as a private fortress by the Thanes of Cawdor. The ancient medieval tower was built around a legendary holly-tree.
Sadly we have to return to Invergordon via the outskirts of Inverness over the Kessock Bridge onto the Black Isle Despite its name, the Black Isle is not an island, but a peninsula, surrounded on three sides by water – the Cromarty Firth to the north, the Beauly Firth to the south, and the Moray Firth to the east. we then cross the Cromarty bridge and retrace our steps back towards Invergordon where we say haste ye back as you re board your ship with fond memories of Our Majestic Highlands.
